Cambridge Museum of Technology

Many people will have frequently seen the Museum - the octagonal Victorian chimney rising up from the riverbank is its most obvious sign - or even passed by regularly without going in. It has somewhat limited opening hours (Sunday afternoons, Easter to October and the first Sunday in the month October to Easter). Few people know, however, that the Museum is willing to open specially for visits from Scouts and Cubs in the evenings.
The museum asks for a donation of £2.00 per head with a minimum of £50.00 - that all goes to keep the steam and gas engines in working order. Groups are taken around by a guide who will talk about the operation of the pumping station in victorian times, what it was used for, how it pioneered recycling before the word even existed, and demonstrate a gas powered engine the size of a small bus.
Allow an hour and a half - there are some 'hands on' pumps outside which might be made available in the summer evenings. For further details please contact Dr Adam Upjohn (01223 365805).
